Apple's revenue is still breaking records, but net profit is down nearly 18% year-on-year. This is the first time Apple's quarterly net profit has fallen in nearly a decade.
Apple yesterday released as of March 30, 2013 fiscal second quarter earnings. Revenue for the quarter was $43.6 billion, up 11.3 percent from a year earlier, while net profit was $9.547 billion, down 17.9 percent from a year earlier. Apple CEO Tim Cook said the new record revenue was due to strong sales of the iPhone and iPad. In the second quarter, 37.43 million iPhone units were sold, up 7% year on year. The iPad sold 19.477 million units, up 65% year on year.
The Chinese market is important. Cook said that in the Chinese market has achieved the best quarterly results ever. Including retail store revenue, China's market revenue reached 8.8 billion billion US dollars, up 11% year on year. But this growth rate is weaker than the performance of the past few quarters. Cook explained that if you look at sales to end users, Apple's revenue in Greater China has increased by about 18% year-on-year, so the actual situation is better than the surface data. One bright spot in China was a 138 percent year-over-year increase in iPad sales. Cook believes that there are great opportunities in the Chinese market in the future. Apple plans to double the number of retail stores in China in less than two years, currently 11.
Apple also announced a buyback and dividend plan, outside analysis of Apple's share price is expected to get temporary support, Apple's share price recently fell below the $400 mark. The market strongly expects Apple to launch new products, and Cook hinted that new products may be launched this fall.
